The resemblance between cars and insects has been noted by many. There is the VW Beetle, the Toyota Smart INSECT, taxidermy insects that morph into cars, and that doesn't even include science fiction references. Anyway, you are not alone if you ever had the feeling you were sitting inside a coleoptera, as it was flying along a highway to get from one dung heap to another. Car designers were looking to nature for inspiration. Behold: the first minivan (also first fiberglass body and air suspension), the 1935 Stout Scarab, created by "The Father of Aviation", William Stout. It wasn't really for suburban families, but for parties (which I imagine to be Egyptian themed). Many of the innovations of this car were applied to future cars, but unfortunately only a few of these were ever made.
